Now it's time to start planning your route. As you go
through the planning steps outlined here you will
find each step is quicker than the last. This is
because you have all the information you need to
hand. Often time is wasted and campaigns lose
momentum because you need to go back and set the
objectives in the middle of a campaign.
Choosing
The Right Strategies
For each
objective establish:
- What
change would have to occur to make your
solution happen?
- Who
has the power to make those changes? (Be
specific about which group or groups they
are.)
- What
will make them take that action? (Also
consider what they currently think about this
issue and what barriers will stop them from
acting as you would like them to!)
- Describe
your argument in their language and on their
terms. This is the campaign message. You may
need to develop a different message for each
group.
- Get
the message to the group in the format that
suits them best. Does that group read the
local papers? Attend public meetings? Browse
the net? Pick up leaflets?
Strategies
To Choose From
The range
of strategies that people have successfully used to
win campaigns is boundless. A campaign strategy can
be a demonstration, a leaflet, a piece of research, a
media interview, a sponsored walk, a meeting with a
politician, non-violent direct action. All these have
helped win campaigns.
Consider
what other people have done - could we adapt that for
our campaign? Or think up some new ideas that will
help persuade your particular audiences to take
action. Use your imagination!
