Meetings

It's useful to set regular meeting times in advance, so that people always know when they're on and can plan to participate. For the same reason, it's important to establish a regular meeting place.

Meetings are great for 'brainstorming' ideas, feeding back information to the group about what's been happening and setting goals. They are also good for evaluating key events and activities, so you can learn from successes and failures.

For meetings large and small, it's worth establishing the following roles at the beginning:

Getting Started
Volunteering
Fundraising
Meetings Keeping the Group Together
Keeping in Touch With Activists
Avoiding Burnout
Community Action Links
Read A Book

  • Facilitator - to keep people focussed on the agenda and make sure everyone has a chance to have their say.
  • Time keeper - to make sure the agenda items keep to their allocated time and the meeting doesn't drag on.
  • Minute keeper - to take notes on what's been decided, who's promised to do what, etc (especially so people who missed the meeting are kept up-to-date).

It's important to give everyone a chance to add items to the agenda before the meeting starts. It's also good to have an updates section at the beginning of all meetings. Remember not to talk over people in meetings. Maintaining group harmony is probably the first and most important victory for any campaign.
